April 4 Pandemicia coronavirus report #4

Wuhan hospital
The most affected countries Italy and Spain have passed the inflection point of maximum daily cases but this is more a case of saturation than bringing the epidemic under control. Of theWestern countries, Only Australia, New Zealand and Austria can make claim to having stabilised the number of infections.

Other major countries - the USA, Canada and Britain - have yet to reach a peak of infection. After re-opening Wuhan, the Chinese government has become concerned at the re-appearance of cases. Cases in middle income countries are starting to advance. Developing countries remain relatively unaffected.

There is no sign yet of the global epidemic reaching a peak - this may take several weeks. [ERROR - while the European epidemic did indeed max out in March, the American epidemic continued. The entry of middle-income countries ensured that new cases were still rising 3 months later]

As the epidemic advances, the focus has moved from cases to deaths. The largest single day number  of deaths was recorded in USA today at 1320, passing Spain's maximum a few days ago. European deaths per day are now over 5000, and are more than three quarters of the world total.

Some international disputes over equipment have emerged - Turkey has been refusing to release a batch of Chinese ventilators bound for Spain.

With such large numbers of Americans below the poverty line, the lack of social support programs has become critical in the present crisis. President Trump has promised to pay hospitals for uninsured patients.

Ecuador is one of the more heavily affected countries in Latin America, and protest has broken out in Guayaquil over the inability of relatives to bring out remains for burial, due to quarantine and curfew  restrictions. Some have left bodies out in the street for collection. Special camps are being built for the infected.
