10 June Pandemicia coronavirus report #28

Epidemic

Confirmed cases are over 7 million and deaths over 400,000. Brazil has passed 700,000 cases. The US will pass 2 million cases in several days, Russia 500,000, and India will move into third place. Pakistan has done a very major surge, probably due to an an increase in testing.

Jacinta Ardern introduces lockdown Mar 23
About 64,000 more people than usual have died in the United Kingdom during this year's coronavirus pandemic. Official CV deaths are 40,680.

Saudi Arabia is the second country to pass into a big 'second wave', and UAE may follow it. Iran may be coming of its second peak. It is hard to understand what is happening in the second infected country. .

NZ is declaring the disease eliminated - joining a few other countries who have been less public about it. The last of the country's coronavirus restrictions were removed last night. Cities came back to life as people returned to their offices and browsed the shops with public transport crowded once again.
"People are shopping, dining and just hanging about holding hands, It's so lovely to see."
Twenty-two American states have shown a surge in cases following the end of lockdown - including some areas not previously associated with the pandemic. Cases by state, and relaxing of restrictions, are shown here.  About 72,000 cases have occurred among health care personnel, of whom 380 have died. Respiratory specimens showing COVID-19 are running at about 6% of cases and still falling.

The US aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt has found 60 percent of sailors who tested had antibodies for the virus. All 4,800 sailors on the ship were previously tested for COVID-19 and about a quarter were positive. Only one has died.

Passengers are preparing to sue Aurora Expeditions, the operators of the Antarctic cruise ship
Greg Mortimer, left stranded in Uruguay, saying they placed commercial concerns ahead of safety. A respiratory physician on board has found that only 19% of those infected were symptomatic (5:1) with a quarter of these requiring ventilators. This is a higher proportion of asymptomatic than on other cruise ships.

Tanzanian President John Magufuli declared the East African country "coronavirus-free" thanks to prayers by citizens. Some weeks back, Magafulu discovered a pawpaw and a goat were infected - when he was suspicious of the quality of tests. The last cases were on 8 May, but detection has been very patchy.

A good proportion of 979 'mysterious deaths' in Nigeria's northern Kano province have now been linked to CV, they have included high level officials and health staff. Most have been among the elderly. As CV moves into more remote locations, the likelihood of their being recognised will diminish once again. If deaths are 150% of the recognised total in teh UK, the discrepancy will be very much higher elsewhere.

Geopolitical

The Black Lives Matter rallies continued around the globe for more than a week. In a survey, 80% of US citizens thought the country was out of control. Concern was expressed that the lack of social distancing at the rallies would lead to extended outbreaks.

Response

Most countries now seem to be copying the US example of opening for business whenever cases or deaths fall, rather than when they are almost eliminated.

Italy re-opened its border for travellers on June 3.

The world will need 15 billion doses of CV vaccine to get travel started again, according to one doctor.

WHO finally decided to encourage people to wear face masks in public places on June 6.

In San Diego bars, movie theatres and swimming pools will be opening on Friday 12 June; however in teh big cities even hairdressers are still closed. . The Big City Mayors coalition have backed Gov. Gavin Newsom's proposal to earmark $600 million in federal CARES Act funding for homelessness solutions such as purchasing hotels and motels. They also urged legislators to approve $350 million in "flexible" funds for other intervention strategies to ensure homeless people who are moved into shelters or hotels under the state's Project Roomkey program during the pandemic don't wind up back on the streets .

By and large the world seems to be heaving a sigh of relief and getting on with it - just as the main part of the epidemic gets rolling, in global terms. This is probably because the main global generators of money and news attentions have driven down their epidemics through several months of lockdowns. These are now ending - with very substantial unexposed proportions of the population still present.

The epidemic has accelerated the growth of  'virtual hospitals' and online consultations, which are attractive to people of all ages and which are now funded in Australia under Medicare. Phone consultations however still are favoured over videoconferencing.

Economy

The US stock market looks to be returning to its pre-COVID level, having recovered above the 2019 low. The V-shaped recovery is hard to understand given the smash hit to earnings - but the market often gets it right. It was helped by a 2.5 million drop in US unemployment numbers.

After a dive to 58.5c, the AUD has returned to its pre-COVID of 70c level to the USD. The Australian stock market has passed the Fibonacci recovery point (0.618), recovering almost 2/3.

In Australia the government announced the Homebuilder subsidy to keep the building industry afloat. There has been a lot of interest in renovations during the lockdown. The Federal government will pay $25,000 on building projects over $150,000, for buildings with an ultimate value less than $1m. This has attracted a lot of criticism as Australia has a severe shortage of affordable housing and these payments will mostly go to middle-class homeowners.

The pandemic has been used as an excuse to close local news sources - already under considerable threat from online inroads. Over 200 contractions of newsroom sources have been recorded in Australia. This has been described as an "extinction event"

As news is waning, I will move out to weekly reports while I finish the remaining country reports.
