The global million milestone was passed today as I slept. 20 million would seem to be too conservative an estimate for the ultimate number infected by this fast-moving snippet of RNA.

At the country level
  • Spain and Germany had well bypassed Italy in new daily cases, with both closing on the Italian total. In fact Spain exceeded China in new cases at its peak.
  • Russia began to spike upwards, with 800 new cases.
  • After a surprisingly slow start over three months, Japan began to surge. Middle income countries Chile, Philippines, India, Pakistan and especially Brazil remain zones of concern.
  • Australia continued to stabilise its position. So did Thailand and Malaysia, and South Africa, which has had less than 100 cases per day for 6 days.
  • Most developing countries still had only trace quantities of the virus detected
Political bickering continued to take the place of concerted action in the USA. Doubt was cast on the White House forecasts of 100,000 to 240,000 deaths, rather than developing a consensus expectation. Argument continued as to whether Trump had closed the White House epidemic unit or merely responsibly downsized it. In the meantime, 6.1 million had registered for unemployment benefits amid what promised to be the greatest recession since the 1930s.

Researchers from China confirmed that CV persisted in the air after simply talking or breathing, indicating that masks were in fact useful.[1] Up until this point, ordinary citizens had been told they were unnecessary. The rapid control that had taken place in countries where mask wearing was commonplace indicated that it might have a useful role, even though virus particles were too small to be stopped by most masks.

A week after we decided here that CV had probably stabilised in Australia, and four days after our press release announcing that it had, using some simple pattern recognition, some media are finally saying there are 'encouraging signs that it might have' [2]
